The best laser pointer for you: a UK buying guide
Six questions that lead you to the right laser pointer: what you will use it for, colour, pen or Pro, battery, safety keys and what to look for in a seller.

There is no single "best laser pointer". There is the best laser pointer for what you want to do with it. A teacher needs something different from a stargazer, and a cat owner something different again. Answer the six questions below and you will know exactly which laser to buy – and what to watch out for when you do.
Question 1: What will you use it for?
Start with the job, not the gadget. The main uses we see:
- Presentations and teaching – indoors, short distances. See laser pointer for presentations.
- Stargazing – dark, long distances, cold nights. See laser pointer for astronomy.
- Scaring birds – outdoors at dusk and dawn. See laser pointer for scaring birds.
- Outdoor pointing and work – roofs, trees, sites, hikes. See long range laser pointer.
- Pets – short play sessions indoors. See laser pointer for cats and dogs.
- A gift – see laser pointer gift ideas.
Question 2: Which colour?
Colour determines how bright the dot looks. At the same class 2 output:
- Green (532 nm) is the brightest to the eye: the choice for anything outdoors or at distance, and for large halls.
- Red is calm and clear on a projector screen: the presentation classic.
- Violet (405 nm) looks dimmer but has a striking colour and makes fluorescent materials glow.
Not sure? Choose green – it does everything reasonably well. The full comparison is in red vs green laser pointer.
Question 3: Pen or Pro?
Our range has two families. Laser pens – X1, X2, M1, Z1 – are slim, pen-shaped pointers with AAA batteries. Pro models have an aluminium body, a rechargeable cell and a charger. Full-size Pro models (G3 Pro, G1 Pro, R1 Pro, V1 Pro) add two safety keys; compact Pro models (G2 Pro, R2 Pro, V2 Pro) are 11–12 cm long.
Important: Pro does not mean more power. Every laser we sell is class 2 up to 1 mW. Pro means build quality, a rechargeable battery and, on the full-size models, a key lock.
Question 4: AAA or rechargeable?
Occasional use: AAA batteries are easy and available everywhere. Daily use: a rechargeable laser is cheaper to run and the charger is included. The details are in rechargeable vs AAA laser pen.
Question 5: Do you need safety keys?
If there are children in the house, if the laser is shared in a classroom or office, or if it lives in a vehicle, a key lock is a sensible extra. The full-size Pro models come with two safety keys. Without a key lock, simply store the laser where children cannot reach it.
Question 6: Is the laser legal and honestly labelled?
In the UK, class 2 – an output up to 1 mW – is the class intended for sale to the public. Be wary of listings that promise burning power, popping balloons or many kilometres of range: those are not class 2 lasers, whatever the label says. A good seller states the class and output clearly, explains safety and does not oversell. We measure every unit before dispatch. Common mistakes when buying a laser pointer
- Buying red for outdoor use. Red is lovely on a projector screen but reaches far less outdoors. For stars, birds and distance, buy green.
- Chasing milliwatts. More power means more risk, not a better laser. A class 2 green laser shows a dot at approx. 1 km in the dark (indicative).
- Forgetting the battery. A daily user with an AAA pen will spend a lot on batteries; an occasional user with a rechargeable laser may find it flat when needed. Match the battery to your habits.
- Ignoring the household. With children at home, choose a model with safety keys or have a safe place to store the laser.
- Expecting a visible beam. With class 2 you mainly see the dot; the green beam is only faintly visible in very dark, humid air.

Whatever you buy, the rules are the same: never aim at eyes, people, animals' eyes, vehicles or aircraft; mind reflective surfaces; keep it away from children.
