How a laser pointer scares birds

Birds react strongly to a bright spot moving towards them across the ground: to them it looks like something approaching, and the safest thing to do is leave. That is why a laser bird scarer has become a popular tool for farmers, allotment holders, groundskeepers, facility managers and homeowners. It makes no noise, uses no chemicals and does not harm the birds when used properly.

Timing is everything. A class 2 laser is at its best in low light: at dusk, at dawn and on dull, overcast days. In bright sunshine a dot is hard to see for the birds as well as for you. Plan your sessions for the first and last hour of daylight, when birds are settling down to roost or arriving to feed.

Step by step

  1. Check your surroundings. No roads, footpaths, houses or people in the line of the beam, and never near an airfield.
  2. Aim at the ground or the roof, not at the birds. Put the dot a few metres away from the flock.
  3. Move the dot slowly towards the birds. A steady, approaching dot works better than wild waving.
  4. Never aim at the birds' eyes and never let the beam sweep across windows, water or metal that can reflect it.
  5. Repeat for several days. Birds learn that the spot means "not welcome here". Consistency matters more than session length.
  6. Combine with other measures: remove food sources, cover crops and close off nesting spots where appropriate.

Which laser for birds?

Always choose green. At the same class 2 output, a 532 nm green dot looks far brighter than red or violet, and it stays visible on grass and roofs at dusk. Indicatively, our green lasers show a dot at approx. 300 m at dusk and approx. 100 m in daylight on a shaded surface.

All models: green 532 nm, class 2, up to 1 mW.

For daily rounds we recommend a rechargeable Pro model. Cold mornings are hard on batteries, so keep a spare PowerFox 18650 2-pack in an inside pocket.

What a class 2 laser can and cannot do

We want you to buy the right tool, so here is the honest picture. A class 2 green laser works well at dusk and dawn, on roofs, fields, courtyards and car parks, and against birds that are not yet used to it. It is not a magic switch in full midday sun over hundreds of metres. Higher-power lasers are sometimes advertised for bird control, but they are not intended for sale to the public in the UK and they bring a real risk to eyes – people's, and the birds'. Read why in our class 2 brightness guide.

Birds and the law

Wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected in the UK. Scaring birds away from an area is a different thing from harming them, but be sensible: do not use a laser near active nests in the breeding season, never aim at a bird directly, and check any local rules for your site. Shining a laser at vehicles or aircraft is a criminal offence. More on laser pointer safety and laser pointer law in the UK.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best laser pointer to scare birds?
A green laser, because green is by far the most visible colour. Our G3 Pro is the most chosen model: rechargeable, sturdy and lockable with two safety keys.
Does a laser bird scarer work in daylight?
Best in low light: dusk, dawn and overcast days. In bright sun a class 2 dot is much harder to see, for the birds and for you.
Does it hurt the birds?
Not when used properly: you move the dot over the ground towards the birds and never aim at them or their eyes.
Which birds does it work on?
It is commonly used against pigeons, gulls, crows, starlings and geese. Results vary per site; repeat sessions over several days work best.
