The X1: a green pen laser pointer that fits any pocket

If you want a laser pointer that is always with you, the X1 is the obvious choice. It looks like a slim pen, clips into a shirt pocket or the inside of a laptop bag, and produces a bright 532 nm green dot at the press of a button. It is the best-selling laser pen in our UK shop, and the reason is simple: green is the colour the human eye sees best, and the X1 delivers it in the most practical format there is.

The X1 is a Starlight Lasers pen with an output up to 1 mW, laser class 2 – the class intended for sale to the public in the UK. Every unit is measured before dispatch. The aluminium pen has a pocket clip, and two powerful AAA batteries are included, so there is nothing to charge and nothing to set up.

Batteries

The X1 runs on two AAA batteries. With normal use a set lasts at least about a month, depending on how much you point. That is its big advantage for occasional use: you can buy AAA batteries in any shop, and there is no charger to forget when you travel. Take the batteries out if you will not use the laser for a few months. X1 or X2?

The X2 is the same idea with a pattern cap that projects shapes and figures. Want only a clean dot? Take the X1. Want all three colours? The laser pen set combines the X1 with the red M1 and the violet Z1.

Safety

Class 2 means the blink reflex protects your eye against a brief, accidental exposure – it does not make staring into the beam safe. Never aim the laser at eyes, people, animals' eyes, vehicles or aircraft, and watch out for mirrors, windows and water that can reflect the beam.
