Why a green laser pointer?

The human eye is most sensitive to green light. That is why a green laser pointer at 532 nm looks so much brighter than a red or violet one with the same class 2 output. For anything beyond a meeting room – pointing at a roof, showing someone a star, moving pigeons off a field at dusk – green is the colour to choose. Indoors the dot is crisp and easy to follow on a wall, a whiteboard or a projector screen.

Every green laser on this page is a Starlight Lasers model with an output up to 1 mW, laser class 2 – the class intended for sale to the public in the UK. There are two families. The green laser pens are slim, pen-shaped pointers with a clip that run on two AAA batteries. The green Pro models have an aluminium body, a rechargeable lithium-ion cell and a charger in the box. Both families share the same 532 nm colour and the same indicative range; the difference is in battery, size and finish.

How far a green laser pointer reaches (indicative)

SituationVisible dot
Indoors30 m+ (a whole room or hall)
Daylight (dot on a shaded surface)approx. 100 m
Duskapprox. 300 m
In the darkapprox. 1 km (dot); the beam is faintly visible in very dark, humid air
Indicative: depends on the light, the weather and the surface.

Our advice in one paragraph

Want the most popular all-rounder? The G3 Pro is the green laser pointer most customers choose: rechargeable, two safety keys, solid aluminium. Prefer a removable pattern lens on a Pro model? Go for the G1 Pro. Want the smallest rechargeable option for a key pouch or coat pocket? The G2 Pro. Need a light pen for presentations and the odd evening outdoors? The X1 green laser pen is our best-selling pen in the UK, and the X2 adds a cap with shapes and figures for fun projections.

Using a green laser responsibly

Green lasers are bright, which is exactly why you should treat them with respect: never aim at eyes, people, animals' eyes, vehicles or aircraft, and keep them away from children. Read our laser pointer safety guide before first use. Planning to use one for birds or stargazing? See scaring birds with a laser pointer and laser pointers for astronomy. Still comparing colours? Read red vs green laser pointer.

Frequently asked questions

Is a green laser pointer brighter than a red one?
Yes. At the same class 2 output a 532 nm green dot looks several times brighter than red, because the eye is most sensitive to green. That is why green reaches further at dusk and in the dark.
What is the difference between the green laser pen and the green Pro models?
The X1 and X2 pens are slim and run on two AAA batteries. The G1 Pro, G2 Pro and G3 Pro have an aluminium body, a rechargeable cell and a charger; the G1 Pro and G3 Pro also have two safety keys. Colour, class and range are the same.
Can I see the beam of a green laser pointer?
You mainly see the dot. With a class 2 green laser the beam is only faintly visible in very dark, humid air – do not expect the bright beam you see in videos of high-power lasers.
