What makes a purple laser pointer different?

Searching for a purple laser pointer or a blue laser pen? What you are probably after is a violet laser at 405 nm: a deep blue-violet dot at the very edge of what the eye can see. Because the eye is not very sensitive to this colour, a violet dot looks dimmer than red or green at the same output. In return you get a colour that turns heads, and the light makes many fluorescent and glow-in-the-dark materials light up – fun on glow paper, highlighter ink or glow-in-the-dark stickers.

All our violet lasers are Starlight Lasers models with an output up to 1 mW, laser class 2. The Z1 violet laser pen runs on two AAA batteries. The V1 Pro and V2 Pro are rechargeable aluminium models with a charger in the box. Choose violet for the effect, for collectors who want all three colours, or as a second laser next to a green one – not for long distances.

Is violet the same as a blue laser?

Not quite. 405 nm sits between blue and ultraviolet and looks violet-purple. It is often sold as a "blue laser pen" or even a "UV laser pointer", but it is visible light, and at class 2 it is a pointer, not a curing or burning tool.

Who buys a violet laser?

Mostly people who already own a green or red laser and want the third colour, people who like the glow effect on fluorescent materials, and gift buyers looking for something out of the ordinary. If you want all three colours in one go, the laser pen set (X1, M1, Z1) and the Pro set (G1 Pro, R1 Pro, V1 Pro) are the simplest way. For distance, pointing at stars or bird control, go for green instead.

Violet is still a laser: never aim it at eyes, people, animals' eyes, vehicles or aircraft, and keep it away from children. More on laser pointer safety.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a violet laser look dimmer than green?
Your eye is far less sensitive to 405 nm violet than to 532 nm green. At the same class 2 output the violet dot therefore looks dimmer and reaches less far.
Is a purple laser pointer a UV laser?
No. 405 nm is visible violet light close to the UV range. It can make fluorescent materials glow, but it is a class 2 pointer up to 1 mW.
